Jay Ryan Book Signing Animals and Objects in and Out of Water
19th December
12-4pm
We at the Richard Goodall Gallery are mighty big fans of poster genius Jay Ryan, and so it is not without due excitement that we announce the arrival of the good man himself to our Thomas Street gallery on the 19th December for a unique ......book-signing event.
A collection of Jay’s favourite work from 2005-2008, ‘Animals and Objects in and Out of Water’ is a 144 page book which includes over 100 posters with accompanying text, an introduction by Andrew Bird and an essay by Joe Meno. All in all it’s a pretty cracking volume, and this is your chance to own a signed copy!
Ryan first learned to screen-print in 1995, and cut his print-making teeth making posters for his own band, those of his friends, and the many clubs they played at. Before long, Jay’s own Bird Machine Print Shop sprung to life in the basement of his apartment building, before moving above ground in 2002 thanks to the growing demand for its marvellous creations. Jay has since worked for bands including Arctic Monkeys, The Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie, The Doves, Interpol, Human League and Sonic Youth to name but a few.
Not only will you have the opportunity to see this pillar of poster-making in the flesh, but there will also be posters old and new on display, original art work, and a friendly festive atmosphere in which to enjoy it all!

Artists contributing to this spectacular ensemble include Kenn Munk, Woolloomooloo, TADO, Mr Scruff, Pete Fowler, Sichi, ILoveDust, Okkle and lots more!
As if all this excitement weren’t enough, Matt and Doktor A will be in real-life attendance at Richard Goodall Gallery on Saturday 12th December to sign cups, flyers or foreheads (depending on your mood).

Richard Goodall Gallery at the Affordable Art Fair 22nd – 25th October
Battersea Park, London
The Affordable Art Fair has been leading the charge for accessible art since its launch in 1999, and is one of the principal UK showcases for affordable art, priced between £50 and £3,000. 120 carefully chosen galleries from acr......oss Europe and the UK will be exhibiting contemporary drawings, paintings, photography, prints and sculpture. We figure it’s only right that one of those carefully chosen galleries should be us!
Marking the Affordable Art Fair’s 10th Anniversary, the Richard Goodall Gallery will be in attendance exhibiting the wonderful works of a number of our favourite artists including Ron Job, Donald Topp, Central Station, Kendra Binney and Niagara.
With the Spring Collection 2009 attracting over 22,500 visitors, this Autumn Collection is set to be the accessible art event of 2009 and (luckily) you don’t have to be an art genius or a multi-millionaire to enjoy it. For free entry to the Affordable Art Fair, pop in to Thomas Street to pick up your flyer!

New Exhibition - Artist and Repertoire – Drawings by Mike Smith, head of Columbia Records, 19th October
Not content with being, as he puts it, “a kid from Birkenhead who ends up signing a few decent bands and then gets given Columbia Records to run”, Mike Smith is also a pretty brilliant artist. Having drawn inspiratio......n (see what I did there?) from pretty much every gig he’s been to, it’s been our pleasure to wade through thousands of Smith’s images (head of Columbia Records = a whole lot of gigs) to bring together an incredible selection for your viewing delight.
Beginning his illustrious career as a talent scout for MCA Music in 1988, Smith later joined EMI Music in 1992 and rose rapidly through the ranks due to impeccable taste and superlative scouting skills. Having signed Supergrass, Doves, Avalanches, Starsailor, The Libertines, The White Stripes, Gorillaz and Teenage Fan Club before moving on to assume his current role as MD of Columbia Records, it seems Smith is something of a talent guru. Did I mention he’s also an artist? A really good one?
Produced as fine art prints, the collection for this exclusive exhibition spans 20 years of musical magic and includes the likes of Bob Dylan, Blur, Faithless, Elbow, The Doves, Kasabian, The Gorillaz and many more besides.
The first of its kind and a unique event, this exhibition should on no account be missed, forgotten, stood up or otherwise unseen. If you’re the thorough type, you can even check out Smith’s enviable blog here.
