Statement:
“When we have our ears open and are sensitive to sonic space, WE REALIZE. Our minds will be broadened, and hence the world will be different.”
As a phonographer, I always hope there is more effort paid to soundscape studies as part of urban design (public domain) and Hong Kong contemporary art. At a personal level, awareness of sonic qualities of space/place is also a culturally audible revisit to ourselves (private domain) as well as to our city, Hong Kong.
We are so used to seeing and visual perception is primary to ways of listening. The unseeable is very often ignored. For example, in the recent environmental assessment report written by “paid professionals” for the new railway system that will cut across our valuable farmland in western New Territories – issues of noise and underground water are not examined closely. Saving our farmlands is as important as restoring the Kai Tak River.
Areas along the Kai Tak River, audibly, range from green and quiet secondary schools’ campus environment to shockingly noisy roadside. Can the sounds of the river, pertinent to its spatial qualities (or can the spatial qualities be CHANGED if it is not good enough), help the community in any way by reducing noise pollution?
This work tries to deal with listening, and works around sonic space specifically regarding traffic noise/street noise, which endemic to Hong Kong. From the meditative set up and the medium specificity of the audio equipments that go together with the contrasting soundscape (traffic noise and running water sound of the river), I hope, more attention is given to our perception of sound as an essence of our way of thinking, as well as our way of living within a space which is to a large extent shaped by administrators, urban designers and architects.

Among 60 works from all over the world in the competition section, "Who's Afraid of Ghost!?" won the Best Sound Prize at Cambridge Super 8 Film Festival.
By applying the idea of phonography sound art and techniques of sound walk to collect audio ethnographic materials on ghost festival in Kwun Tong (east of Hong Kong), it breaks away from conventional sound design which stresses dialogue as main narrative element and music as emotion enhancer. This also renders the poetic moving images in this experimental documentary rooted in the unique soundscape of ghost festival.

http://www.kwuntongculture .hk/home.php?op=about#2

dear friends,
we are happy to soft-launch this project -- A Map Of Our Own – Kwun Tong Culture and Histories. we have been working on it for 2 years and will go on for another 12 years.
http://www.kwuntongculture .hk/en/home.php
as some of you may know, Kwun Tong town centre will experience the largest urban renewal plan in Hong Kong. 2 years ago, i thought, it might be good to have an interactive web site, that are of moving image, photography and sound creative works, while our sister blog, "living in kwuntong" (http://kwuntong.wordpress. com) is a text-based informative site. now, after months of effort, it's time to share with you all.
briefly, this project is a database driven website, a participatory,
interactive and locative archive on Kwun Tong culture. it supports
multiple contributors and various types of media works (sound, still image and moving image). visitors can interact with this archive in various ways including search on map/time line/ categories; sharing of media works in other web 2.0 platforms; audio-visual mix and rendering of itineraries for Kwun Tong walk.
if you are not familiar with multi-trajectories and non-linearity of
interactive web site, here is a visitors guide for your reference.
http://www.kwuntongculture .hk/en/home.php?op=about#5
i have two roles in this project -- project director and one of the
contributors.
as a contributor, i have 64 posts/works on the web site. and until
today, there are 125 works from 16 contributors. we will go on upload creative media works especially before the town centre is gone. this is an open platform and how the site will become depends on the ways contributors use it. definitely, we welcome others who are interested in Kwun Tong culture and history. if you are interested to join us, pls let me know.
furthermore, we use hong kong creative commons license for
authorization of copyrights and distribution of media works. we hope this project can also serves as an experiment of allowing others to use some of our works tagged by share-alike license for creative works.
we are still re-working on the design of the archive page... and more refinements are coming... and our work continues...
please spread the news, leave messages at individual posts' comment field, or write to me directly on any suggestion and comment.
thanks very much.

2) "Who's Afraid Of Ghost!?" (my new short film) will be premiered at Cambridge Super 8 Film Festival 2009
http://www.cambridge-super
the short film will be shown in the competition programme I, at 7pm on 29th of April.
Synopsis:
Through re-exploring Ghost Festival, a Chinese tradition, this experimental documentary expresses the artist’s revisits to childhood experience and her present concern of urban re-development plan to the old community -- Kwun Tong (district in the east of Hong Kong). An auto-ethnography fabricated by poetic moving images and experimental soundscape design.
Artist’s words:
In Chinese tradition, the seventh month of the Lunar calendar is called Ghost month in which spirits and ghosts will come out from the lower realm. Heaven, Hell and the realm of the living are open.
As a child living in Kwun Tong (a district in the east of Hong Kong) in the 1970's, Ghost Festival meant food and play, fun and a night out... and today, I am afraid...
This film was shot in Aug 2008 at Kwun Tong, my home town, where urban renewal plan will take place soon, from 2009 to 2020. I wonder, will the tradition continue after the old community turning into super high-rise and huge shopping malls?!
Ghost Festival, traditionally stresses the good will to pay tribute to ancestors, to histories, to help the poor and save all from suffering.
...the good will, and compassion of the Buddha...
Who's afraid of ghosts now; and what will be the good will… when the community is about to experience drastic changes…

Title: Count, Down To Yu Man Square
Artist: Anson Mak
Year: 2009
Place: Hong Kong
Format: 48kHz 16bit Stereo
Duration: 12 min 50 sec
Synopsis:
Count, Down To Yu Man Square
At new year’s eve, hawkers selling noodles, soup, fish balls, bbq, worked over night in Yu Man Square. The street stalls form vital part in the cultural mapping of local old community.
Before the new year countdown, Yu Man Square was the regular main street of Kwun Tong. Amazingly after the countdown, and out of my expectation, people rushing down to the streets from AMP, the new shopping mall that had changed Kwun Tong’s fate.
The largest Hong Kong urban renewal plan will be happening in the area. People have started to count down also for Kwun Tong culture that lives only in its space.
Recently I have been thinking, countdown is like a deadline. And important countdown implies huge changes before and after that very deadline. Such as the end of June in 1997. The sound of that countdown never fades in my history, as in HK history.
Using the countdown recorded at Chater Garden in Central in 1997, and mixing it with the 2009 Yu Man Square soundscape, I simply, and humbly, hope to light up a new year wish that huge change ahead (after any deadline), whatever it is, will be of justice and people can live in harmony with compassion.
And if street culture really needs to be faded… may harmony and compassion help us to re-build…
